Detroit Police Department
Welcome to The Detroit Police Department Homepage. This is where you can find a brief introduction to the department, and from here, you can explore the rise, ruin, and rebirth the department experienced. The Detroit Police Department has had a rich history since it’s founding in 1865. With the advancement of motor technology in the early 1900’s, it was the first city to have radio dispatch in their patrol cars. However, as the city grew more in debt, the department experienced a decline as well. Since the cities bankruptcy, the total number of officers has dropped 37%. The department currently has a total of 1,590 officers, but only half of them have the responsibility of patrolling the whopping 142 miles that is Detroit. As you read further you will be able to see how the Detroit Police Department rose to fame and glory, and then experienced it's sharp decline. While the department is still facing issues, there might still be a glimmer of hope. |
