Arson in Detroit, Michigan.Arson can be defined as "the willful or malicious burning of property (such as a building) especially with criminal or fraudulent intent", as stated by Merriam-Webster. It is responsible for more than twenty-five percent of all of the reported 500,000 fires that occur in the United States every year. Detroit - there's not much left to burn at this point. Arson is a huge issue is many cities across the nation but nothing compares to this hell of a city. According to Detroit News, last year alone, there were 3,839 fires and 3,500 buildings demolished. Of the thousands of abandoned buildings in Detroit, many have been left standing. Even those that have fallen victim to arson are still untouched since. About two thirds of the 9,000 homes that have caught fire in the past few years, are still burdening neighborhoods. An article by Gary Ridley shows us the top ten cities with the worst arson according to fires per 100,000 citizens. This would bring Detroit at number three in the nation, although it has the highest number of fires per year and highest percentage of abandoned housing of these top ten.
