Rebirth:Needle Exchange
Needle exchange is a current program that allows injecting drug users to obtain hypodermic needles and associated paraphernalia at little or no cost. Its believed on the philosophy of harm reduction that attempts to reduce the risk factors for diseases such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. The social service asks that the user brings back the needles in exchange for new ones.
They allow such a thing because many drug users would start leaving needles in abandon houses or other parts of Detroit. It got to such a problem that people would be so desperate to use other peoples old abandon needles on themselves. This would cause an even bigger problem: HIV. (Click more to find out).
This program has help get those numbers to go down.
There are currently four needle exchange places in Michigan and one in particular in Detroit. By doing so this allows Detroit to
get cleaner one step at a time. Instead of leaving them around the city, this allows for a safer environment.
