Currently in the City of Detroit, the rate of crime is slowly decreasing. At the end of 2015, there were a total of 295 murders. In 2014, there were a total of 298 murders and in 2013 there were a total of 316. The overall property crime rate of the the city is 1.6 times the national average. Major changes are definitely being made to help decrease the overall amount of crime in the city, but those changes are being implemented very slowly. The relationship between the Detroit Police Department and the residents of Detroit is also getting better as time goes on. Over the years, Detroit has had something known as the anti-snitch policy. Because neighborhoods in Detroit are so close, everyone knows everyone. Unfortunately, even today many residents today do not feel the need to call or talk to the police when they see a crime being committed.
Detroit's homicide rate has been on a steady decline. According to the graphic above, the homicide rate was extremely high in 1987, with 63.5 homicides per 100,000 people. In 2012, there were just 55.4 homicides per 100,000 people.
